Costco Payday Schedule 2026: Pay Dates, Pay Periods and Your First Paycheck
Costco pays its employees every other Friday. That is 26 paychecks a year, deposited overnight, so the money is usually sitting there when you wake up.
That part is simple. What trips people up is the gap between the day you work a shift and the day you get paid for it. Depending on where in the cycle that shift lands, it is anywhere from 6 to 20 days.
The short answer
Pay frequency: biweekly, every 14 days.
Payday: Friday.
Paychecks per year: 26.
Pay stub posts: the Wednesday before payday, in ESS.
Three-paycheck months in 2026: May and October.
Every other Friday, and nobody at Costco gets paid weekly
The Costco pay schedule is the same everywhere: every two weeks, no exceptions. There is no weekly pay option for part-timers, seasonal hires or the gas station crew.
Every hourly employee is on the same biweekly cycle, and salaried supervisors and managers sit on it too. The warehouse in Tukwila runs the same calendar as the one in Miami.
Biweekly means 26 payments across 365 days. Semi-monthly, which is what a lot of office employers use, means 24 payments on fixed calendar dates like the 15th and the last day of the month.
Those two get confused constantly. They are not the same thing, and the difference costs you two paychecks a year in planning terms.
| Pay frequency | Checks per year | Gap between checks | Does Costco use it? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Weekly | 52 | 7 days | No |
| Biweekly | 26 | 14 days | Yes |
| Semi-monthly | 24 | 15 or 16 days | No |
| Monthly | 12 | ~30 days | No |
If someone tells you Costco pays twice a month, they are wrong. Twice a month is 24 checks. Costco pays 26, and in most years two of those months hand you three Fridays instead of two.
The money lands Friday morning, usually before you’re awake
Direct deposits from Costco typically post at 12:00 AM Friday. Plenty of employees report seeing the balance update late Thursday night.
Your bank decides the exact minute, though. A credit union might post the ACH file at midnight while a large national bank holds it until 6:00 AM or later on the same Friday.
Apps that advertise early direct deposit, like Chime or Varo, can release the funds on Wednesday or Thursday because they post the ACH notification instead of waiting for settlement. That is a bank feature, not a Costco one.
Paper checks and pay cards are slower. If you are still on a physical check, you pick it up at the warehouse on Friday during your shift.
Your pay period closes six days before the money arrives
Costco pays in arrears. You work first, payroll processes the hours, then the money moves.
The pay period is 14 days long and it closes several days before the Friday you get paid. Based on the biweekly Friday cycle, a pay period ending on a Saturday is paid the following Friday, six days later.
Here is what that looks like in practice, using the September 2026 cycle.
| Event | Date |
|---|---|
| You work a shift | Sunday, 30 August 2026 |
| That pay period ends | Saturday, 12 September 2026 |
| Payroll processes, stub posts in ESS | Wednesday, 16 September 2026 |
| Money hits your account | Friday, 18 September 2026 |
So a shift worked on 30 August gets paid on 18 September. Nineteen days later.
One detail here deserves honesty. Employees report the pay period boundary differently depending on who you ask, with some saying Sunday to Saturday and others saying Monday to Sunday.
Your ESS timecard shows the exact boundary for your location, and that is the only version that matters for your paycheck. Everything else is secondhand.
Work out your own Costco payday calendar
Because the cycle is a fixed 14 days, one confirmed payday tells you every other payday for the rest of your career at Costco.

Costco payday dates for 2026
The table below is built from a 9 January 2026 anchor, which produces 26 Fridays and matches the dates reported across employee payroll calendars.
Treat it as a strong estimate, not gospel. Run your own date through the calculator above if your warehouse sits on the opposite week.

The first payday of 2027 on this same cycle is Friday, 8 January.
May and October are your three-paycheck months
A 14-day cycle does not divide evenly into a calendar month. Twice a year, three Fridays fall inside the same month.
On the 2026 cycle above, that is May with the 1st, 15th and 29th, and October with the 2nd, 16th and 30th.
Nothing extra is being given to you. Your annual pay is the same 26 checks either way, and the calendar just clustered them.
Still, it is the single best month to make a car repair or a dentist visit happen. Two months a year your rent comes out of one check and you keep a whole second one.
If your anchor sits on the opposite week, your three-paycheck months shift to January and July instead. The calculator flags whichever applies to you.
Your first Costco paycheck takes longer than you expect
Costco does not hold your first paycheck. Nobody at Costco is sitting on a week of your pay as some kind of deposit.
What happens to a new hire is much more boring. You started partway through a pay period that was already running, and that period has to close before payroll can process it.
Start on the first day of a fresh pay period and you wait about 20 days. Start three days before that period closes and the money can be with you in nine.
So the honest answer to "when do I get paid" is: find out where in the cycle your start date landed. Ask your payroll clerk on day one and they will tell you the exact Friday.
Why the first check looks so small
Four things shrink it, and usually all four at once.
You worked a partial pay period, so fewer hours are on it. Orientation hours sometimes process on a separate line and land a cycle later.
Then the deductions start. Federal withholding, state withholding where applicable, Social Security at 6.2 percent and Medicare at 1.45 percent all come out before the number you see.
Benefit premiums and 401(k) contributions usually do not start on check one, which means check three or four can actually be smaller than check two. That surprises people more than the first check does.
Your pay stub shows up two days early
Costco posts pay stubs to Employee Self-Service on the Wednesday before the Friday payday. So you can see the exact net amount 48 hours before the money moves.
ESS is reached through the Costco Employee Website. Inside it you get pay stubs, your timecard, direct deposit details, tax withholding settings, vacation and sick balances, and your W-2 delivery preference.
From outside the Costco network, ESS expects Google Chrome. Other browsers throw errors that look like login failures but are not.
Check the stub on Wednesday. If hours are missing, you have a two-day window to flag it with your payroll clerk before the deposit locks in.
Reading the stub line by line
Most people look at one number on the stub and close it. That is how underpayments go unnoticed for months.
Start at the top with the pay period dates. Confirm they match the two weeks you think you are being paid for, because a stub covering the wrong window is the fastest way to spot a payroll error.
Next block is hours. Regular, overtime at 1.5x, Sunday premium at 1.5x, holiday, vacation and sick each sit on their own line. Add them up and compare against your own count.
Then gross pay, which is everything before a single deduction. This is the number people quote when they say what they earn, and it is never what lands in the bank.
Below that sit the deductions. Federal income tax, state income tax where your state has one, Social Security at 6.2 percent, Medicare at 1.45 percent, your 401(k) percentage, health and dental premiums, and union dues at Teamsters locations.
Net pay is the last line. That is the deposit amount, and it should match your bank to the cent.
Pay attention to the year-to-date column on the right. It is the fastest way to catch a deduction that started without you noticing, and it is what you will need in February when your W-2 arrives.
One habit worth building: download a PDF of every stub. ESS does not keep them forever, and proving income for an apartment application is miserable without them.
Pay card, direct deposit, or paper check
Costco supports all three. Direct deposit into your own bank account is what most employees use and it is the fastest.
The pay card is for people without a bank account. Funds load on the same Friday, though some employees report the balance appearing an hour or two behind a standard ACH deposit.
Paper checks still exist. You collect them at the warehouse, which means your money arrives whenever your Friday shift starts, not at midnight.
Switching to direct deposit is done in ESS and it takes one to two pay cycles to activate. During that changeover you get a paper check, so do not assume the switch is instant.
Holidays pull the deposit earlier, never later
Banks do not process ACH on federal holidays. When a holiday sits next to a Costco payday, payroll moves the file forward.
Christmas Day 2026 falls on Friday, 25 December, which is payday number 26 on this cycle. Expect that deposit on Thursday, 24 December.
The same applies to New Year's Day, Independence Day and Juneteenth in any year they fall on or next to a payday Friday. You get paid the business day before.
Your deposit never slides to the following Monday. That is the one rule that holds across every US employer running ACH payroll.
The payroll clerk is who you actually talk to
Every Costco warehouse has a payroll clerk, and they are the fix for almost every pay problem you will have.
They audit timecards, correct missed punches, process pay adjustments, handle wage authorizations, post the weekly work schedule, and hand out physical checks.
The role pays around $27 an hour at Costco against a national payroll clerk average near $23. Hours are administrative and off the sales floor, which is why the job is hard to get.
Two different people search "Costco payroll clerk schedule" and mean two different things. Some want the clerk's shift pattern, which is typically weekday daytime. Others want the payroll calendar the clerk maintains, which is the biweekly Friday cycle in this article.
If hours are missing from your stub, go to the payroll clerk before you go to your supervisor. Supervisors approve time. Clerks fix it.
State law and union contracts can move the goalposts
Pay frequency is regulated at the state level in the US, and a few states set minimums that are stricter than biweekly for certain job classes.
In practice Costco runs the same biweekly Friday cycle nationally. State law mostly touches final paycheck timing and overtime rules. The regular payday stays put.
The union piece is real and almost nobody writes about it. The Teamsters represent roughly 18,000 Costco employees across a set of locations, and in early 2025 the two sides reached a national agreement after a strike threat.
That contract governs wages, raises and working conditions at those warehouses. The payday cadence is still biweekly Friday, but your wage scale and raise timing come from the contract rather than the standard Employee Agreement.
If you are at a Teamsters location, your shop steward has the document. Read the wage article.
Raises hit your check a full cycle after they start
Costco moves you up the scale by hours worked, not by calendar anniversaries. The reported step is about $1.00 per 1,040 hours.
Full-time employees clear 1,040 hours in roughly six months. Part-timers take around nine.
Here is the part that catches people. A raise effective mid-period only applies to the hours worked after that date, so your first check at the new rate is a blend of both rates.
The full increase shows up on the following check. Two weeks later.
Top of scale for clerks is reported above $30 an hour after roughly five years. Employees past six years of full-time service also get twice-yearly bonus checks, which land as separate payments and are never folded into a regular Friday deposit.
How Costco compares to other big retailers
Biweekly is the norm in US retail. Weekly pay clusters at the employers with the highest turnover, which is how Amazon, Publix and UPS ended up there.
Two caveats on that table. Amazon runs weekly at most warehouses but not all of them, and Sam’s Club follows Walmart payroll, so its Thursday is an inference rather than a published date.
| Employer | Frequency | Typical payday | Checks per year |
|---|---|---|---|
| Costco | Biweekly | Friday | 26 |
| Walmart | Biweekly | Thursday | 26 |
| Sam's Club | Biweekly | Thursday | 26 |
| Target | Biweekly | Friday | 26 |
| Amazon (hourly warehouse) | Weekly at many sites | Friday | 52 |
| Home Depot | Biweekly | Friday | 26 |
Full pay date tables for each of those employers sit in our company payday schedules section, and the Walmart payday schedule is the closest direct comparison to Costco.
Weekly pay is easier to budget week to week. Biweekly gives you those two three-check months, which is the only real upside.
Weekly is the better deal for most people, and almost everyone who has worked both schedules says so. Costco is not going to change, though, so the practical move is building a buffer that covers 14 days instead of 7.
When the money doesn't show up
Deposit is late on a Friday
Give it until 9:00 AM before doing anything. Large banks routinely post the ACH batch mid-morning even when the file arrived at midnight.
Still nothing by noon? Open ESS and check the stub. If the stub shows a deposit and your bank shows nothing, the problem is at the bank and Costco cannot speed it up.
Hours are missing from your stub
Screenshot the timecard in ESS, then take it to the payroll clerk. Missed punches are usually corrected and paid on the next cycle, which means a 14-day wait.
Some states require faster correction of underpaid wages. Worth asking about if the amount is large.
Your final paycheck after quitting
This one is governed by state law, not Costco policy. California requires immediate payment when you are fired and within 72 hours when you quit without notice.
Other states allow the employer to wait until the next regular payday, which at Costco could be up to 14 days out. Check your own state's rule before you assume you have been shorted.
Questions people actually ask
Does Costco pay weekly or biweekly?
Biweekly. Every other Friday, 26 times a year. There is no weekly option for any role.
How often does Costco pay its employees?
Once every 14 days. That works out to twice in most months and three times in two months of the year.
What day does Costco pay?
Friday. Always Friday, unless a federal holiday pushes the deposit to Thursday.
What time does Costco direct deposit hit?
It should hit your account around 12:00 AM Friday. Your bank sets the actual posting time, so a big national bank might not show it until 6:00 to 9:00 AM. Early-pay apps like Chime often release it Wednesday or Thursday.
When does the Costco pay period start and end?
It runs 14 days and closes on the Saturday six days before the Friday you are paid. Employees report the boundary as Sunday to Saturday at some locations and Monday to Sunday at others. Open your ESS timecard for the version that applies to your warehouse.
Does Costco hold your first paycheck?
No. There is no holdback and no withheld week. Any delay is the pay period you joined partway through having to close first.
How long until my first Costco paycheck?
Roughly 9 to 20 days, depending entirely on where your start date fell in the cycle. Ask your payroll clerk on day one for the exact Friday.
How many paychecks does Costco give per year?
26 in a normal year. Every eleven years or so the calendar produces 27 for employers on a biweekly cycle.
Which months have three Costco paydays in 2026?
May and October on the 9 January anchor cycle, with paydays on 1, 15 and 29 May, and 2, 16 and 30 October. If your warehouse sits on the opposite week, it shifts to January and July. The calculator on this page tells you which one is yours.
Does Costco pay early when payday falls on a holiday?
Yes. Banks cannot process ACH on a federal holiday, so payroll releases the file a business day earlier. Christmas Day 2026 is a Friday payday, so expect that money on Thursday 24 December.
Where do I see my Costco pay stub?
Employee Self-Service, reached through the Costco Employee Website. Use Google Chrome if you are logging in from outside the Costco network, because other browsers fail in ways that look like a bad password.
When does the Costco pay stub post in ESS?
The Wednesday before payday. Look at it that day, because you then have two days to report missing hours before the deposit is finalized.
Does Costco offer a pay card or direct deposit?
Both, plus paper checks. Direct deposit is fastest. Pay cards load the same Friday and exist for employees without a bank account. Setting up direct deposit in ESS takes one to two cycles to take effect.
Why was my first Costco paycheck so small?
Partial pay period, plus Social Security at 6.2 percent, Medicare at 1.45 percent and federal and state withholding. Orientation hours sometimes process on a later cycle too. Expect checks three and four to dip again once benefit premiums and 401(k) deductions begin.
Does the Costco payroll clerk fix timecard mistakes?
Yes, and they are the right person to go to. Clerks audit timekeeping and process corrections. Your supervisor approves time but cannot repair the record.
Does Costco pay differ by state?
The payday cadence does not. Wage rates differ by market, and state law changes final paycheck timing and overtime rules, but every warehouse runs the same biweekly Friday cycle.
Is Costco pay different for union (Teamsters) locations?
The schedule is identical. The wage scale is not. Around 18,000 Costco employees are Teamsters-represented under a national agreement reached in early 2025, and that contract sets their pay rates and raise timing instead of the standard Employee Agreement.
How often does Costco give raises?
By hours worked, at roughly $1.00 per 1,040 hours. Full-time staff hit that in about six months, part-time in about nine. A mid-period raise produces one blended check before the full rate shows up on the next one.
Where these dates come from
There is no official Costco payroll calendar. The company has never published one, so any Costco payday schedule handing you exact 2026 dates, this page included, has been reconstructed from the biweekly Friday cycle and employee reports.
The cycle itself is reliable. Fourteen days never changes, so once your anchor date is right, every future payday is exact.
The anchor is the part that can be wrong. Warehouses do not all sit on the same week, and a table built for one cycle is off by seven days for the other.
Which is the entire reason the calculator sits halfway up this page instead of a static list. Pull one real payday off an old stub in ESS, drop it in, and the dates become yours rather than an estimate.
